Monday - March 19, 2007 - CHICAGO - The trial of media tycoon Lord Conrad Black begins in Chicago for fraud and racketeering, with the jury hearing opening statements. A jury was selected Thursday in the racketeering trial of Black, who is accused of swindling the Hollinger International newspaper empire he once ran out of $84 million. Twenty people were chosen, with U.S. District Judge Amy J. St. Eve planning to seat 12 jurors and six alternates Monday and send two home. U.S. Federal Attorney, Patrick Fitzgerald, claims that Hollinger Directors were lied to. Fitzgerald said: "The indictment charges that the insiders at Hollinger whose job it was to safeguard the shareholders made it their job to steal and conceal".

World at Law:Friday - January 11, 2008 - CAPE TOWN, South Africa - South Africa's national police commissioner, Jackie Selebi, is facing corruption charges, prosecutors said Friday. The National Prosecuting Authority said the charges related to Selebi's "generally corrupt relationship" with Glen Agliotti, a convicted drug trafficker. Selebi has consistently protested his innocence. Selebi also holds the largely ceremonial post of Interpol president, and tried to block the move in Pretoria's High Court but the judge dismissed the application. On Tuesday, armed police arrested Johannesburg's top prosecutor Gerrie Nel, who led the probe into Selebi, and hauled him away in handcuffs. Nel is due in court Monday on charges of defeating the ends of justice. The cases have raised tensions between the country's two top law enforcement agencies, which are spending more time fighting each other, than conducting normal business.

Selebi was elected Honourable Member of Parliament during the 1994 elections. In 1995, Selebi was appointed South Africa's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Geneva. Switzerland.[1] In 1998 he got a Human Rights Award from the International Service for Human Rights.
